ABOUT DISCOVER
INDONESIA 2019
As proud and active international students, PPI Newcastle has set up a dedicated committee to organise, manage, and run our biggest annual event, named Discover Indonesia. We are all inspired to promote our nation’s diverse culture globally through an informative, engaging, and entertaining event. Discover Indonesia will serve as a platform for Indonesian students that are currently studying abroad, particularly studying in Newcastle Upon Tyne, to introduce our nation's rich traditions to the international audience as a means of preserving the Indonesian culture.
The event was first established and held in 2014, where positive feedback and success of this event led to its permanent continuation, which runs annually. This year, Discover Indonesia 2019 will be held for 3 days, comprising of a two-day cultural bazaar, ‘SEMARAK’, and a performance night ,‘RETORIK’, to close the annual festival. We hope this year Discover Indonesia will be able to promote, share, and provide awareness of our rich and beautiful culture to Newcastle upon Tyne, the North East and beyond.

OUR EVENTS
RETORIK NIGHT
Carrying our efforts from the last year’s show, we will bring you to a story, where we will showcase various Indonesian cultures wrapped into an interactive musical production. In the warmth of summertime in Bali Island, nomad traveler Jaya suddenly met a Balinese dancer called Sri. Their story about living love and life through the fullest unfolded but seemed eerily strange as they’ve felt to themselves that they’ve felt this way before. Journey through time as Sri and Jaya takes you to their former lives filled with passion, courage, and tragedy. Ragam, which translates as diversity in English, is this year’s main theme of Retorikâ’s musical production.

During the two-day event, the visitors will be able to join the traditional culture workshops, games, and try Indonesian food and beverages while enjoying the traditional music and dances performed by members of the Indonesian Society. Visitors can also experience Indonesian culture through a showcase where they will learn how to decorate and fly a traditional indonesian kite, in one of the stalls.
